Overview

The Regional Director of Planned Giving within Hillsdale College’s Gift and Estate Planning Department serves as a leader in high-end donor relations and tax-related planned giving vehicles.  Must be proficient in identifying and cultivating new and existing donors.  Possesses extensive, verbal, writing, and people skills accompanied with the ability to communicate the College’s mission effectively.  High integrity and devotion to donor intent and donor satisfaction are a must.  Remote work with 40% of travel expected This territory will consist primarily of California, Nevada, and Colorado.  Additional nationwide travel will be required.  Candidates must be experienced in the world of philanthropy, strategic thinking and be self-motivated to succeed.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

Bachelor's degree required, preferably in Finance, Economics, Marketing, or Accounting. Prior experience in development or fundraising or 3 to 5 years of equivalent work, preferably in an institution of higher education or a similarly complex organization desired. Previous charitable planned giving experience or proficient knowledge of charitable giving vehicles preferred.

Personal Characteristics  

The Gift and Estate Planning Office interacts with current donors and potential donors.  A professional appearance and a pleasant relationship that is supportive of the College mission is essential.  This relationship needs to be engaging, supportive, and professional while maintaining confidentiality at all times.

Physical Requirements 

Ability to read, write, hear, speak, see, and communicate effectively. Ability to operate basic office equipment including, photocopiers, fax machines, adding machines, computer equipment, display monitors, and the like. Occasional lifting of office supplies, booklets, etc. is necessary.

Be a good representative of Hillsdale College to promote the liberal arts, the College’s original Articles of Association, and operating principles stated in the Staff Code of Commitment. The Mission Statement should be considered in all aspects of the position. The teaching of the Christian faith shall remain a conspicuous aim of the College.

Responsibilities

1. Plan and execute donor initiatives in outright and legacy giving that lead to major gifts, bequest designations, as well as other planned giving vehicles such as charitable gift annuities and charitable remainder trusts.
2. Have existing knowledge of tax law and how it impacts and enhances donor giving or possess an aptitude to be efficiently trained on such matters.
3. Travel extensively throughout the given region(s) and nationwide to attend high-profile Hillsdale College events and develop and maintain donor relationships.
4. Experience in databases such as constituent management systems,
5. Strong analytical and project management skills.
6. Must be self-motivated and goal-orientated to reach independent personal and institutional goals.
7. Understand and support Hillsdale’s mission and the four purposes that have defined this Higher Education Institution since 1844: Learning, Character, Faith, and Freedom.
